Top-Down, Bottom-Up Approach

Psych Central utilizes both top-down and bottom-up strategies in treatment interventions. “Top-down” methods focus on the brain, such as cognitive behavioural therapy or neurofeedback, while peripheral biofeedback modalities are “bottom-up” training examples.

In essence, strategies that stimulate alterations in the brain and consequently impact the body are “top-down”, and those that induce changes in the body, subsequently influencing the brain, are “bottom-up”.
